Nausea is the sick queasy feeling that makes you feel like you may throw up. You may feel it only in your stomach, or alll of the way up into your throat, or chest.
Nausea is not a disease by itself. It is just another generalized symptom that is associated with a myriad of actual conditions and diagnoses. It is just one more way that your body is trying to tell you that something is not quite right.
You may also have:
An upset or tight stomach
Sweating
Extra saliva in your mouth
Loss of appetite
Stomach pain or cramping
Vomiting
And yes, you can feel nauseated without actually throwing up.
Nausea has many possible causes. Sometimes the problem begins in the stomach. Other times, the stomach is simply reacting to something happening elsewhere in the body.
Common causes include:
A stomach virus
Food poisoning
Acid reflux or indigestion
Motion sickness
Certain medications
Stress or anxiety
Dehydration or overheating
In Arizona, nausea can also be an early sign of heat exhaustion. Pay close attention when nausea begins after working, exercising, or spending time outdoors in hot weather.
The important question is not simply, “How do I stop feeling sick?”
The better question is, “Why does my body feel sick in the first place?”
When nausea is mild and there are no danger signs, a few simple steps may help:
Sit still and rest.
Move into a cool, quiet room.
Take small sips of clear fluid.
Avoid drinking a large amount all at once.
Eat small amounts of bland food when you feel ready.
Avoid greasy, spicy, or heavy meals.
Stay away from strong smells.
Do not lie flat right after eating.
Clear fluids may include water, an oral rehydration drink, or broth. Bland foods may include crackers, toast, rice, bananas, applesauce, or plain potatoes.
Do not force food when you are actively vomiting. Fluids are usually the first concern because vomiting can quickly lead to dehydration.
Nausea does not always lead to vomiting.
Your brain, stomach, inner ear, nerves, hormones, and emotions all help control the nausea response. Something can disturb that system enough to make you feel sick without causing you to vomit.
Acid reflux
Indigestion
Anxiety or stress
Motion sickness
Medication side effects
Dehydration or overheating
Low blood sugar
Inner-ear problems
Stress or anxiety
Again we are exercising our Pattern Recognition: does the nausea happen after eating, while driving, during headaches, after taking medicine, or when you become overheated?
Most short-term nausea is not an emergency. Sometimes, however, nausea is part of a more serious problem.
Seek urgent medical help when nausea or vomiting comes with:
Chest pain or trouble breathing
A sudden, severe headache
Confusion, fainting, or severe weakness
Severe or worsening stomach pain
A hard or swollen abdomen
Vomit that contains blood or looks like coffee grounds
Green vomit
Signs of severe dehydration
A recent head or abdominal injury
Inability to keep fluids down
Signs of dehydration may include a very dry mouth, dark urine, very little urine, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, or extreme weakness.
Call 911 when nausea comes with chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe confusion, fainting, or another life-threatening symptom.
